‘Remember veterans beyond Memorial Day’

The Daily Record - 6/9/2020

From a pulpit inside Sunset Hills Burial Park in Stark County this week, the Rev. Edd Matako suggested Memorial Day be more than a single-day celebration. He said it should be a way of life.

Parades, picnics and flags placed on gravesites of military veterans are well and good. But Matako, in delivering his message at the cemetery’s annual Memorial event, said it’s not enough.

“What do we do ... the other 364 days of the year?” he asked.

Organizers crammed a cacophony of patriotism into the 30-minute program, which featured the 555th Honors Detachment from Wooster handling the colors, three-volley salute and taps.

Brad Morris sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “America the Beautiful” and led the Pledge of Allegiance; Steve Libby and Lonnie Teitel shared duties in reciting the names of each of the area’s 115 deceased veterans handled by Dignity in the last year.
