CUSTOM ADAPTATION
PURPOSE: Provide affordable adapted recreational equipment for children with disabilities. This adaptation starts with a heavy-duty trike. The main component is a child’s ride-along seat (usually installed on the rear of an adult’s bicycle) which serves as the seat. This type of seat can usually be picked up on the cheap at a garage sale or thrift store. The foot rest area is cut away from the seat to make the foot holders for the pedals. The foot holders are cut about an inch from the bottom using a hack saw, if necessary a block of wood or some other material can be used as a spaced and place between the foot holder and the pedal if the trike is too large for the child. The seat back can be cut to any height desired, depending on the trunk support needed. Most ride-along bicycle seats have a shoulder harness and seat belt, which might be needed. A small pulley is attached to the center of the handlebar, a rope going to both pedals helps support the foot holders to make it easier to strap in the feet. Velcro or quick-connect strapping can be used to help hold the feet in place. If added handlebar control is necessary, a sliding adjustable stop can be placed from the frame in front of the seat to the frame over the wheel to allow for limited turning radius for additional stability. A push handle can also be added to the back if assistance is needed from behind. These parts may need to be built from scratch. It is not necessary to weld or make structural changes to the trike, just add the components. TITLE: Affordable Recreational Equipment. JOURNAL: Exceptional Parent Magazine.
