Ayanna Pressley braces for U.S. Supreme Court ruling on abortion

Boston Herald - 6/24/2022

Anticipating one of the biggest days in U.S. Supreme Court history, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley was up early today urging President Biden to declare a public health emergency over abortion.

The court is expected to rule today on the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, with a leaked early draft suggesting a majority of justices intend to strike it down.

Pressley, in her role as chair of the Pro-Choice Caucus’ Abortion Rights and Access Task Force, wrote early this morning in a letter she signed along with task force colleagues that black lives will be at risk if Roe is overturned.

“It is clear that attacks on reproductive rights and abortion access are a threat to the public health and will put Black lives most at risk,” the lawmakers wrote. “We urge you to use any and all executive authorities to address the public health crisis our nation will face if Roe v. Wade is dismantled. Declaring a public health emergency and national emergency will allow your Administration to utilize additional flexibilities, deploy resources where necessary and act with the urgency that this moment requires.”

If the court does quash Roe, progressives say they’ll renew a push to add more justices to the court and turn the focus on state rights over abortion.

This is a developing story …
