Patriot-News - 6/21/2022

Freshpet has recalled one lot of its Select Fresh From the Kitchen Home Cooked Chicken Recipe because it has the potential to be contaminated with salmonella.

The recalled food comes in a 4.5-pound bag and has a sell-by date of Oct. 29, 2022, according to an announcement with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Freshpet the lot had been designated for destruction but some was inadvertently shipped to retailers.

The company said it has not received any reports of illness. The lot may have been sold at Target and other retailers in Pennsylvania as well as in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, Vermont and West Virginia; and at some Walmart stores in Alabama and Georgia.

Details are:

Salmonella can affect not only the animal eating the food but also humans - especially children, the elderly and the immunocompromised - who handle contaminated food.

Human symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Salmonella also can cause arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms.

Dogs who are sick with a salmonella infection may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some dogs will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain.
