Duval reports 15 new COVID-19 deaths as Florida's death toll nears 30,000

The Florida Department of Health reported 157 more deaths from the coronavirus pandemic in Wednesday's daily report, including 16 of them in Northeast Florida.

Duval County recorded 15 deaths and Putnam County reported one.

So far, state officials have calculated 29,311 deaths from the pandemic in Florida. The state is on pace to surpass 30,000 COVID-19 fatalities in its official total this week.

The state reported more than 7,000 new positive cases in its report, bringing its cumulative total to 1,844,627 since the beginning of the pandemic.

Duval County added 310 new cases, with 44 in Clay County, 50 in St. Johns County, 30 in Nassau County, 13 in Putnam County and four in Baker County.

The Florida Department of Health's positivity rate across the state decreased to 6.42 percent for laboratory results received on Tuesday.

For Duval County, the new-case positivity rate decreased to 5.72 percent for results received Tuesday. Clay County dropped from a two-week high back down to 5.75 percent and Baker County, which was at 11.67 percent one day earlier, dipped to 2.35 percent. Nassau County, though, jumped from 2.75 percent into the double digits with 10.36 percent. Putnam County (6.59 percent) and St. Johns County (4.77 percent) also recorded increases.

Continuing the trend of the past month, the Agency for Health Care Administration recorded a further decrease in current COVID-19 hospitalizations by 186 to 4,460 as of 3 p.m. Wednesday. Those hospital statistics have decreased by more than 3,000 since mid-January.

Duval County listed 248 current patients with a primary diagnosis of COVID-19, with four in Baker County, 44 in Clay County, eight in Nassau County, three in Putnam County and 11 in St. Johns County.

Vaccine updates

So far, the state has received about 3.4 million vaccine doses to date. State data shows that over 2.4 million people have received at least one dose and 1.1 million have received both doses.

On Wednesday, the City of Jacksonville announced that anyone who received their first dose of the vaccine between Jan. 20 and Jan. 28 at the Regency Mall site should be scheduled for a second dose of the vaccine. The city said that anyone who has not been scheduled but received their first dose in that timeframe at Regency Mall should report to the site with their CDC vaccine card and a form of I.D. any day between 3 and 4:30 p.m.
