IDPH reports fewer than 2,000 new COVID-19 infections

The State Journal-Register - 2/8/2021

Feb. 9—Illinois Department of Public Health officials reported 1,747 new COVID-19 cases Monday — the lowest number of new cases since early October.

Although new cases reported on Mondays are usually lower after weekends, the numbers show Illinois' cases continue a downward trend.

In addition to the new cases, 35 more deaths were reported. Over the last 24 hours, state labs processed 47,210 test results.

The preliminary seven-day statewide test positivity rate was 4.1%, while the positivity rate as a percent of total tests from the last seven days was 3.3%.

While official reports indicate progress, 2,161 people were still hospitalized with the virus. Of those, 469 were in intensive care units and 251 were on ventilators.

Illinois also has given 1,358,967 doses of COVID-19 vaccines. This includes over 16,000 given on Sunday. The seven-day average of vaccines administered is up to 51,553 per day. Almost 300,000 Illinoisans are fully vaccinated, which is 2.35% of the state's population.

In Sangamon County, 6,893 people have been vaccinated — 3.53% of the county's population.

The county reported 152 new COVID-19 cases from weekend data, which includes 50 new positives reported on Monday. No additional deaths were reported, but 27 people remained hospitalized from the virus. Sangamon County's positivity rate dropped to 4%.

In Menard County, 15 new cases from the weekend were reported, including four new cases Monday. Three people remained hospitalized and the county's positivity rate was 10.2%, which is nearly a full percentage point higher than it was last Monday. Menard County has also vaccinated 2.6% of their population.

On Saturday and Sunday, the IDPH mobile testing center will be at Shop & Save at 1755 Wabash Ave. in Springfield from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
