Tolland council to consider issuing a statement on racism

Journal Inquirer - 2/6/2021

Feb. 6—TOLLAND — The Town Council will meet virtually Tuesday to consider a statement on racism after striking down a proclamation last month that had included a request for a declaration of racism as a public health emergency.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. and is being held virtually via Zoom.

Councilman Lou Luba said Friday that nobody on the council is saying racism within Tolland doesn't exist.

"We all said that we are looking at it and we are not ignoring any issues with racism," Luba said. "The disagreement is what is the most appropriate way to deal with it."

During a meeting on Jan. 26, the council voted 6-1 to strike down the proclamation, with Councilwoman Brenda Falusi voting in opposition.

According to Luba, it's more appropriate to issue a statement in order to examine the issue of racism to see what action the council can take that's within its control, such as modifying policies or procedures and ensuring employees have appropriate sensitivity training.

"We will examine these things. We will look at this and then we will work towards ensuring that the issue of racism doesn't rear its head within the town of Tolland," Luba said.
