2-month-old Hampton boy killed in January in apparent child abuse case

Daily Press - 6/29/2022

In what appears to be a child abuse case, a 2-month-old boy was killed in Hampton in January, according to police.

An emergency medical team was called to the 2200 block of Shell Road in Hampton on Jan. 7. Police declined to say what injuries the child sustained or the cause of death, citing an ongoing investigation. The child died in a hospital Jan. 10, Hampton police Sgt. R.C. Williams wrote in an email. He declined to say what hospital the child was taken to.

The Hampton police are not releasing the name of the victim because he is a juvenile. The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made.

The death was not ruled a homicide until after the medical examiner’s autopsy. Williams said he did not know when the medical examiner made the determination. He added that the Hampton police did not tell the public about the child’s death in January because it had not immediately been ruled a homicide.

The Pilot and Daily Press learned about the death in the course of reporting on the total number of homicides in the city. There have been 15 homicides in Hampton since the beginning of the year.
