Jacksonville shooting suspect has past domestic-violence issues; wife filed injunction same day

Florida Times-Union - 3/2/2021

A 63-year-old suspect remains hospitalized after gunfire left a 23-year-old victim injured on Feb. 22, then SWAT and tear gas ended an hours-long standoff, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

Earlier that day, Charles Dean Stanton's wife filed an injunction for protection against him saying he was questioning where she had been and saying she belongs in the ground, according to court records.

And Stanton's arrest report, released Tuesday by the clerk of court, shows his wife asked the victim to come to the Arlington home with her because "the suspect stated he was going to shoot her."

Officers were called about 5:30 p.m. to the home on West Tidewater Circle on reports of a traffic crash with the driver shot, Lt. Greg Terrell said at the time. The 23-year-old driver was shot in the abdomen and forearm and was hospitalized in life-threatening condition, according to Stanton's arrest report.

Stanton's wife was driving with the victim sitting next to her when they pulled up to her home, the arrest report said. She walked inside, and that's when her husband asked who was outside.

"The suspect came out, went back into his home and retrieved a handgun, came back out and started shooting at the victim," Terrell said. "The victim fled the area and ultimately crashed around the corner."

The victim's relationship to the 56-year-old wife was not identified in the report.

The suspect then barricaded himself inside his home until SWAT used tear gas, police said. Terrell said he was intoxicated, which Stanton's wife said was common. A police dog also injured the 63-year-old, according to the report.

Stanton was absentee booked on a charge of aggravated batter with a deadly weapon with bail set at $500,000, according to jail records.

Stanton has had domestic issues in the past.

His wife's current petition states that he came home on Feb. 21 and began arguing with her, "accusing me of things that did not take place," it said.

She said Stanton had also threatened to shoot her, her mother and dog three months earlier, pointing a gun at her, the petition said. She said Stanton told her that if she called police, "everything in the home would be dead before police could get there."

Stanton also was arrested about eight years ago at the same home for aggravated battery, according to his 2013 arrest report. The report said Stanton argued with his wife, then jumped off a couch, tackled her and put a gun to her head.

"You're dead!" he told her, she said in that report.

Stanton pleaded guilty and received 18 months of probation, plus counseling, court records show.
