Cumberland man gets 22 years in prison for sex assault in Pawtucket

Providence Journal - 3/1/2021

A Cumberland man was sentenced to 22 years in prison after he was found guilty of first-degree sexual assault in Pawtucket, Rhode Island Attorney General Peter F. Neronha announced Monday.

James Robinson, 33, was found guilty Feb. 11 of three counts of first-degree sexual assault after a two-week jury trial in Superior Court, according to Neronha.

At the trial, the state proved that on the night of Feb. 1, 2019, Robinson sexually assaulted a woman "who was known to him" at a home in Pawtucket, Neronha said.

The victim filed a complaint with the Pawtucket police the morning after the assault, according to Neronha. The police brought Robinson in for questioning and he admitted sexual contact with the victim, Neronha said.

Judge Stephen Nugent on Tuesday sentenced Robinson to 45 years at the Adult Correctional Institutions with 22 years to serve and the balance of the sentence suspended with probation, according to Neronha.

The court also issued a no-contact order between Robinson and the victim. Robinson must comply with all statutory requirements relating to sex offender registration and attend counseling.

Neronha said, "I am grateful to the victim for her strength and courage in coming forward, for making sure that her voice was heard, and for seeing this case through to a successful conclusion.

"No sentence, however long, can undo the harm the defendant inflicted on the victim here through his criminal misconduct. That said, the long years of imprisonment now facing the defendant — every one of them entirely deserved — will hopefully provide the victim with some sense of justice and deter others who would commit acts of sexual violence."
