19-year-old Wisconsin girl who killed her alleged sex trafficker released on community-raised bail after two years waiting for trial

The New York Daily News - 6/23/2020

After two years behind bars awaiting trial for fatally shooting the man who sexually abused her for more than a year, Chrystul Kizer was released Monday after an advocacy group raised enough to pay her $400,000 bail.

Kizer, now 19, met Randall Volar when she was 16 after she posted an advertisement on Backpage, hoping to earn money for school supplies and snacks, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Volar, who was already under investigation by the Kenosha Police Department for sexual conduct with girls as young as 12, contacted her and the two met.

The then-33-year-old man physically and sexually assaulted Kizer for almost a year before he was arrested in February 2018 for child sexual assault. Authorities found video evidence of Volar sexually abusing multiple underage black girls, according to officials, but he was released.

In June 2018, Kizer shot and killed Volar, set his house on fire and fled in his BMW, according to the Journal Sentinel. She claims that Volar was trying to hold her down on the ground when she thought him, but prosecutors claimed the murder was premeditated.

She was charged with arson and first-degree intentional homicide, which carries a life sentence in Wisconsin. But a trial date still hasn’t been set.

On Monday, Kizer walked out of jail after a group of community advocates, including the Chrystul Kizer Defense Committee, Chicago Community Bond Fund, Milwaukee Freedom Fund and Survived & Punished, raised her $400,000 bail, which had previously been lowered from $1 million.

“The better world protesters are struggling for is one that protects not punishes survivors,” the Milwaukee Freedom Fund said in a statement.

“Chrystul’s case deepens the current calls for justice and the need to keep fighting to transform our society. While the systems designed to hurt our community still exist, bail funds and mutual aid projects are a necessity that we are proud to be a part of.”
