Observer-Dispatch - 6/17/2020

A 77-year-old Herkimer man was arrested Tuesday on charges that included sexual abuse and rape.

Herkimer village police arrested Leon Everson Sr. following a joint investigation conducted by the village police, Oneida County CAC and the Herkimer County CAC (YWCA) into allegations that he had molested multiple juvenile females over the course of several years, according to police Chief Michael Jory.

The investigation found that Everson had subjected girls younger than 13 to sexual contact on an ongoing basis from the summer of 2019 until April 2020. The investigation is continuing.

Everson was charged with one count of first-degree rape, two counts of first degree sexual abuse and one count of endangering the welfare of a child, police said.

He was arraigned and committed to the Herkimer County jail on $50,000 cash bail or $200,000 bond. Orders of Protection have been issued on behalf of the victims.
