Oregon man faces 2,750-year prison sentence for alleged rape of girl

The New York Daily News - 6/16/2020

An Oregon man faces a more than 2,750-year prison sentence after he allegedly confessed to sexual abuse against a child for years, starting when the little girl was just 6 years old.

David John McCutcheon, 39, has been charged with 70 counts of first-degree rape, as well as 40 counts of first-degree sodomy and 110 counts of criminal mistreatment, KOMO News reported after McCutcheon was taken into custody earlier this month by Cottage Grove police.

In the state, rape carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years. The usual mandatory sentence for sodomy is eight years, but for children younger than 12, it’s hiked up to 25 years.

The 70 counts of rape multiplied by the mandatory minimum sentence would amount to at least 1,750 years, if he’s convicted. McCutcheon could face an extra 1,000 years if convicted on all 40 counts of sodomy.

The case began late last month following a report to police in Eugene, about 23 miles north of Cottage Grove. The latter city though is the location of the alleged crimes.

McCutcheon was interviewed by authorities last week, during which he allegedly admitted to having committed the crimes. He was then arrested Tuesday, according to online records, and arraigned the following day.

McCutcheon is next scheduled to appear in court on July 16.
