Man with autism missing when van is stolen from Anaheim has been found

Daily News - 6/23/2022

A 63-year-old autistic man who was in a U-Haul when it was stolen from Anaheim on Wednesday afternoon, June 23, was found Thursday morning in Los Angeles with the truck, authorities said.

“He is in good health,” Anaheim police said in a statement.

Around 2:20 p.m., the man, with the mental capacity of a four-year-old, was left in the 2011 GMC box truck while his caregiver stepped inside the Anaheim Department of Motor Vehicles on the 3100 block of West Lincoln Avenue, Sgt. Jacob Gallacher said.

The caregiver was inside for a few minutes, and when he stepped back out the truck was gone.

The person who took it was described as a woman, her face partially covered by a white bandana.

Authorities received a tip later in the evening that a truck matching the description was seen at a Chevron gas station in Los Angeles.

Anaheim detectives were sent to do a follow-up, and around 8 a.m. Thursday morning the truck was spotted with the man inside in the 3000 block of South La Brea Boulevard of Los Angeles, a residential area not far from a business district at Jefferson Boulevard.

The suspected thief was not in the vehicle, and no arrests had been made as of Thursday.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
