Sperm donor fathered 15 children, but didn’t inform mothers of his genetic condition

Patriot-News - 6/2/2022

James MacDougall fathered 15 children by advertising he’s a sperm donor on social media, but what he didn’t advertise is his inherited genetic condition that could impact the children.

MacDougall request to see four of the children was heard at Derby Crown Court, according to BBC. During the hearing, it was confirmed he has Fragile X syndrome, which is an incurable genetic condition that can be inherited.

Judge Justice Lieven said MacDougall exhibited “fundamental irresponsibility” by becoming a sperm donor, and said he “took advantage” of women who wanted to have children and use a private donor.

The judge reportedly further described him as a “complex character” with learning disabilities and on the autistic spectrum.

While he requested to see four of the children, he regularly met with one of them between October 2019 and March 2020 despite an agreement he would never have contact.

But the judge called his agreement, saying the three-page document was wrapped in legalistic language that would be “difficult to read even for a lawyer.” While in the document he admitted to having the Fragile X syndrome, it’s not explained what it means.

Now following a court hearing, the 37-year-old man was told he couldn’t contact three of the children, while a judge allowed him to be identified to protect other people from his sperm donations.
