Region 10 names Althea Green Teacher of the Year

The Register Citizen - 6/19/2020

Jun. 17--HARWINTON -- Regional School District #10's 2020 Teacher of the Year is Althea Green, a special education teacher at Harwinton Consolidated School.

Green has taught in Region 10 for six years, and came to the district with 21 years of teaching experience, according to a statement.

"Green provides educational services for students with autism spectrum disorders and other developmental disabilities," district officials said. "Her passion for working with students of differing abilities started with an experience in high school."

"I've always loved kids, and I first became interested in special education during my senior year when I 'helped' in a seventh-grade special needs classroom," Green said. "I already knew that I wanted to go into teaching, but realized then that working with kids who had differences in learning was really what I wanted to do."

The school district considers Green a passionate advocate.

"Althea ... maintains a focus on supporting their academic and social growth and development. She has fostered strong connections with her peers and partnered with them to ensure that all students are an integral part of the classroom and school community at Harwinton Consolidated School," said Superintendent Howard Thiery. "We are incredibly fortunate to have Althea as a member of our community and representing us as the 2020-2021 Teacher of the Year."

During the pandemic, Green has continued supporting students with disabilities, providing services to support their well-being, and demonstrating why she is so highly respected.

"I knew the moment I met Althea that she was someone special, not just as a teacher but as a person," said Director of Student Services Dana Corriveau. "While she worries about how students are doing in school, she always wants to know more about how they are 'doing' in all facets of their life.

"The same is true for her relationship with colleagues and parents. She embodies the many characteristics we would want for Teacher of the Year, and then some," Coreveau said. "Althea's work isn't her work -- she embraces it as who she is. I am honored to work with her and have her working with our children."

On receiving the award, Green said, "I am beyond honored and humbled to be chosen as Region 10's Teacher of the Year. Being considered worthy of this award by parents and colleagues is pretty amazing."
